Periodontics Advanced Dentistry El Sobrante

Most patients who visit our office have some degree of periodontal, or gum disease. It’s not that they’re less careful about their oral hygiene.  Gum disease is often the result of factors like stress or hormonal changes. That’s why we go over your health history and the medications you’re taking.  We take radiographic images to see if there is bone loss, measure movement in or around your teeth, and look for the bad types of bacteria in your mouth.  Only then can we personalize a plan that gets treatment started as soon as possible. In our El Sobrante Dental Office, we use laser therapy to remove infected tissue and eliminate the bacteria causing the infection. Millions of people are at risk for periodontal disease, and it should be taken very seriously.  Recent studies have shown that it can contribute to a higher risk of heart disease and other health problems.  A periodontal assessment is always a good idea for all adults.

Periodontal Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and Root planing removes etiologic agents which can cause an inflammation to gum tissue and the surrounding bone. This non-surgical therapy will remove plaque and tartar which completely cleanses the periodontium. Anyone suffering from gingivitis or moderate to severe periodontal disease will benefit from this procedure.

A Scaling and Root planing may be necessary for prevention, tooth protection, aesthetic effects, and better breath.

After a thorough examination of the mouth, Dr. Dalia Perez-Salinas may decide a scaling and root planing needs to be performed. She will take X-Rays and visually examine to make the diagnosis before recommending or beginning the procedure. Depending on the condition of the gums, amount of tartar and the depth of the pockets.

Scaling is performed with special tools that remove plaque and calculus from the crown and root surfaces. To help reduce the amount of oral bacteria, an irrigation process may be used to send an antimicrobial agent below the gums.

Root Planing is performed to remove any surface dentin that is embedded with microorganisms. To promote good healing and to help bacteria from forming in the future, the root of the tooth will be smoothed. The gums may then be treated with an antibiotic to help with any irritation and to help them heal quickly. The following appointment, your gums will be examined to see how well the pockets have healed and to see if additional treatment is required.
